Call for papers

The ALT 2020 conference is dedicated to all theoretical and algorithmic aspects of machine learning. We invite submissions with contributions to new or existing learning problems including, but not limited to:

  • Design and analysis of learning algorithms.
  • Statistical and computational learning theory.
  • Online learning algorithms and theory.
  • Optimization methods for learning.
  • Unsupervised, semi-supervised and active learning.
  • Interactive learning, planning and control, and reinforcement learning.
  • Connections of learning with other mathematical fields.
  • Artificial neural networks, including deep learning.
  • High-dimensional and non-parametric statistics.
  • Learning with algebraic or combinatorial structure.
  • Bayesian methods in learning.
  • Learning with system constraints: e.g. privacy, memory or communication budget.
  • Learning from complex data: e.g., networks, time series.
  • Interactions with statistical physics.
  • Learning in other settings: e.g. social, economic, and game-theoretic.

We are also interested in papers that present viewpoints that are new to the ALT community. We welcome experimental and algorithmic papers provided they are relevant to the focus of the conference by elucidating theoretical results, or by pointing out an interesting and not well understood behavior that could stimulate theoretical analysis.

Accepted papers will be published electronically in the Proceedings of Machine Learning Research (PMLR), and will be presented at the conference as a full-length talk and optionally also as a poster. Additionally, rejected papers will also be considered for being presented at the poster session.

Workshop and posters

This year, we are collocated with the 2020 edition of the Information Theory and Applications workshop (ITA 2020), and the two events will overlap on February 8 for a day-long symposium we’re calling ITALT (Information Theory Applied to Learning Theory). The symposium will feature distinguished speakers and include a poster session. All authors will be invited to present a poster, and even those without an oral presentation at the main conference will be considered.

Awards

ALT 2020 will have both a best student paper award (E.M. Gold Award) and a best paper award. Authors must indicate at submission time if they wish their paper to be eligible for a student award by adding a footnote to the student’s name saying “Eligible for best student paper award”. This does not preclude the paper to be eligible for the best paper award. The paper can be co-authored by other researchers.

Venue

The conference will be held in San Diego, CA, USA from February 810, 2020.
